Oranges are juicy, sweet-sour fruits rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. Thanks to their beneficial properties, they are used both for fresh consumption and for the production of juices and jams. Among the Italian excellences, the Ribera P.D.O. Orange stands out as a key ingredient in the production of Agrisicilia jams. The Ribera Orange embodies the deep bond with the territory and the passion of local producers. Ribera is also called ‘the city of oranges’ and enjoys an ideal climate, made unique by the fertile valleys watered by the Verdura, Magazzolo and Platani rivers, which gives each orange unique flavour and quality characteristics.

Origin and provenance of Arancia di Ribera P.D.O.

The first evidence of orange cultivation in the Verdura river valley dates back to the early 19th century. Production was excellent and also destined for export to the United States. In 1930, the introduction of the Brazilian and Washington varieties led to an evolution in quality, replacing the previous varieties. The Arancia di Ribera consortium was established in 1944 to consolidate and protect the local cultivation. In 1950, these oranges were officially recognised as Arancia di Ribera and since 1966, they have participated in the local market fair, an event celebrating their quality and the importance of the area.

The P.D.O. denomination

In 1944, local producers founded the consortium of protection of “Arancia di Ribera di Sicilia” to protect and enhance the uniqueness of the oranges through the ‘Riberella’ brand. The consortium is committed to strict controls at every stage of production: from cultivation to processing and transport, guaranteeing the quality and uniqueness of the product and protecting consumers from unfair competition. In 2011, the Ribera Orange obtained official recognition of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) from the European Union, becoming the only orange that can boast this prestigious certification.

Characteristics and uses of Arancia di Ribera P.D.O.

The Ribera orange has a spherical-ellipsoid shape and an intense orange skin, which tends to turn slightly reddish in late winter. The flesh, blond and with a delicate texture, melts pleasantly in the mouth. It is ideal both as fresh fruit and for juicing. The Ribera orange is appreciated for its high juiciness and unmistakable taste in the kitchen and can be used for both sweet and savoury dishes. The peel can also be used for the preparation of candied fruit.
